Technology for Beginners
By letsteach
Easier than you think!
It all started when I moved from California. My best friend has her MAEd in educational technology and I felt like I was still living in the stone ages. She was emailing (which I could do easily) but she was also using her PDA (a Palm Pre) to manage her crazed high school teacher life! I envied her ability to keep track of her life without carrying a calendar in her purse and stressing out if her "book" wasn't with her at all times.
I finally caved and bought the same phaone that she had purchased, knowing I could pick her brain whenever the phone was "smarter" than me. :-) I have called her numerous times and have also been in contact with my cellular carrier and the Palm Pre help people. As a teacher, I tell my students constantly that there is no shame in asking questions. But, when it came time for me to learn something new, I did not want to appear "unknowledgeable".
I am now proud that I can easily use the calendar feature (touch on the calendar in the tool bar of the phone) and also use the alarm feature. I can easily send pictures to my friends of knitting projects I have done, and am currently working upon. Love the MMS feature bubble on the pictures!!!
I am also easily texting my friends and coworkers whenever something crosses my mind that I needed to tell them or I have a question that needs answered but I know I will forget to ask.
The best part is this- my 6 year old students have no fear and can usually figure out any problems I run into. Just remember, with the Palm Pre, doing a hard reset is no crime. Neither is pulling the battery, mumbling some "adult" words under your breath and reinstalling the battery!
Now the next big step... teaching my 63 year old father to text!! Wish me luck!
